World Maritime Exchange desires to be known as a partner in the improvement of human and organizational performance in the maritime industry. Our priority is the pursuit of excellence in everything we do for our clients, or for ourselves.

17 years ago Capt Berny Coffey interviewed over 70 successful yacht brokers, and some new boat dealers. Successful is defined as individually earning over $100,000 annually. From this research Capt. Berny found the important “TIPS” that made a yacht broker or dealer successful.

Capt Berny joined a local yacht brokerage and convinced the owner to allow him to recruit and train brokers around the USA and have them supported by the local brokerage. Capt Berny did so and in short, within a year had 20 brokers from Florida to Chicago, and Texas to Maine. None of the brokers had previous experience, but they did have a history of accomplishments, and they had a propensity to plan their work and work their plan.  Each of these brokers were successful in building an inventory for sale of 40+ boats within 60 days.

Over the first several years the behaviors of the new brokers were under close observation and so were the behaviors of broker management. It was concluded that for the brokers who were used to a corporate setting before training, in general, had a difficult time working from their home office. In addition, it was observed where the brokers followed their business plan they were successful.  Also, there was a definite lag time in startup, for several brokers due to having to get accustomed to working from their home office.

Over time, modifications to the training and the training of management were made for a more successful business and sales plan.

In addition to building a personal inventory for sale, brokers were trained to partner with marinas, yacht clubs, dealers and other marine related businesses to expand their influence and market. This was accomplished throughout the USA. Brokers helped dealers, and marinas sell their member’s boats. Brokers were able to expand and favorably influence each relationship they created.
